Under the omnipresent influence of an architectural background, I have been making sculpture that attempts tense balances between elegance and course physicality, the meticulously planned and the haphazard, skin and structure, interior and exterior, and solid and void. Also I find evident in my work the basic idea that all matter has the fundamental nature of large things made of small things made of smaller things — all being torn apart and reassembled as something new.
Most of my pieces are made from a decomposition and reconstruction of aged, robust wood structure such as abandoned industrial pallets. While the ripping down of the wood is an exercise in blunt force, the reassemble is a balance between a predetermined shape and an improvisational construction process.
