In recent projects I have addressed personal and collective memory through the lives of well-used objects. My current work does not seek to relieve the psychological anxiety of impermanence but rather to face it head on, heightening the present moment while allowing absurdity and humor to take hold. By engaging the senses and drawing out the intimacy of a moment I hope to expand and contract our most precious of resources, time.
Time and presence are the consistent themes of my work, particularly the presence of the audience. I am captivated by the idea of “the moment” as a period of undefined duration, but also as an event of great importance. My work addresses psychological relationships to human infrastructure through visual art, sound, and durational experience. Most of my sculptures look like or reference familiar objects but their intended use is unexpected, and thus creates an uncertain and sometimes humorous relationship between human and device. It is our moment-to-moment relationship with our own inventions, both simple and advanced, which informs my work.
