Beyond Waste Educational Programs

The following opportunities are available for classrooms in San Francisco and provide students with meaningful and fun learning experiences related to reuse, recycling, and composting. Tours and presentations are provided for free by Recology and our partners, including the San Francisco Department of the Environment. Please contact Karina Hammoud at KHammoud@Recology.com or SF Environment at 415.290.5856 to schedule.

Recology Field Trip

The Recology Field Trip is designed to complement the 4th-grade curriculum with a free tour of the San Francisco Transfer Station. Students learn about the differences between linear and circular systems, and how to properly sort materials into the three bins. Teachers can learn more and request a field trip by contacting SF Environment.

Art Lab

Art Labs provide students with a new perspective on how art can inspire people to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Students meet with a Recology artist-in-residence on a short facility tour and have the opportunity to create their own artwork with clean materials scavenged from the Public Reuse and Recycling Area. Teachers can learn more and request an Art Lab by contacting SF Environment.

Offsite Presentations

For students too young, or unable to arrange a visit to Recology, we offer in-class presentations at your school. Our educational programming teaches students about the importance of reducing, reusing, composting, and recycling, and how to properly sort materials into the three bins. Preschool presentations last 20 minutes while older ages last up to 45, and they are accompanied by engaging visuals. To arrange a presentation for your class, contact Karina Hammoud at khammoud@recology.com.

Waste Zero Champion Program

Are you passionate about helping reduce waste at your school site? Join our volunteer Waste Zero Champion Program for teachers, administrators, custodians, or other staff members in San Francisco schools. Waste Zero Champions receive support from Recology, SFUSD, and the San Francisco Department of the Environment to help their school reduce waste, recycle and compost better, and help the City and the District reach ambitious zero waste goals. We can’t do it without you!

Due to high demand, in-person programs are only available to schools located within San Francisco. Programming is offered free of cost, though bus transportation must be secured through either the district transportation office or SF Environment. There is a minimum age requirement of nine years, or third grade, in order to visit Recology facilities.

To inquire further about our student programs please contact Karina Hammoud at khammoud@recology.com.

Please visit ReThink Waste or Stop Waste for programs available to schools on the Peninsula and in the East Bay.
